sIFR2 : Scalable Inman Flash Replacement 2 now open source

I saw that new technology more than 2 year ago. I give a try for one client, but in that time the server was not enough powerful to serve the replacement of the text in the Flash file for that mid-size traffic site.

Now it seem to work nice with the version 2 of that technology. And the good news it's now open source, under the CC-GNU LGPL license, so anyone can use it free of charge.

Here a live example of the technology use at the Journal Le Devoir, a site who get around 500,000 visitors each month.

Google Custom Search Engine

Suppose to be launch tomorrow. A scoop from ... the Financial Time !
Hard to tell if it will be a mix of Google IG, Google Alert and Google Adwords Search for your own vertical search plus a taginng function. Here is the most interesting part of this article :

Users of Google Custom Search Engine will be able to select the websites they want to be included in their searches, and add to this list in future by “tagging” websites they visit. Any searches will then return results just from that slice of the Google search index.

On your browser tomorrow !

Update 24/10 01:30 :

Google News Archive : A first step to free archives

Finally a services to search multiple archives. Some of us have already have already taste, - for a small week -, the possibility to search Alexa's Web Archive. Now we can digg up to 200 years in the archives of a few of open archives (BBC News, Time Magazine and Guardian) and some other who require fees (Washington Post Archives, Newspaper Archive, and New York Times Archives).

But they are also some Canadian (Bravo to Canoe and the newspaper Le Devoir) and even french's articles in it !

How to use

Here is the help page to digg on it.

Napterization of an archaic model of business ?

I bet, somme of the publishers will drop soon the fees to have access to it. Why ? The media are facing two majors problems since a few years with the WWW. Lost of readers and not enough reach for the young market. By opening theirs archives they will solve both. They will also give more authority to their site and make more money with targeted ads.

Another big big lost for Search Engine Watch

Seem Incisive Media, the company who bought Search Engine Watch from Jupiter Media just more than 1 year ago, won't renew the contracts of Danny Sullivan, the founder of SEW and the first Guru on the search engine and marketing sector. I'm sad !

Incisive Media who let go THE "Reference" of the SE sector and the first librarian who catch the importance of search engine in the new web culture, may be want to make more place to the new generation, or IMHO, want to save money and trow out the Gurus who cost them to much !!!

You will definitely missed me, good luck Danny !
PS: If they let go Chris Sherman, I predict the death of SEW in a near future !

Allpeers : Not sure !

Allpeers was supposed to be online today !

Its a P2P Firefox extension for file sharing on YOUR computer. After reading the Techcrunch post this afternoon, i go to the site and the "Coming soon logo" was, - and still is at 0h20 thursday EST-, on the site !

I test the site for fun and simply add /the-normal-keyword/ to the domain name url and voilà ! I'm on the page offering the extension for Win/Mac/Linux. After installing the extension you'll be prompt to a screen for username, password, email... and activation key. Oups..... In clicking the link below explaining what is the activation key, the tell us the key have 12 digits. Ok ! I try the simpliest combination and bang i'm on it and everything works !

Ouf ! This 200,000 line of c++ extension who weight about 13 megabytes and who will open my computer for file sharing is open like that without invitation and a bit more secure activation code ? A bit scary no ?

I test-it half an hour and it was working not so bad. But the bummer is you can't use Firefox without been connected to Allpeers even if you got a Allpeers logo in your Firefox status bar saying your connected. You've got also an Allpeers status in the status on WinXP but the only thing you can do is to quit Firefox or open Allpeers. Not very good if you're doing some intensive transfer with other net application and still need Firefox to surf the web.

Hope they will soon add a way to close or disable the Allpeers connection without to uninstall it. This is what I will do in the next 30 seconds.

Sorry folks but you should not post your blog news about opening with that open "hidden" directory and really stupid activation key number.

Huckabuck : An Search Engine Equalizer

Nice new (2.0 ;-) generation of an meta search engine who query the old folks like Google, Yahoo and MSN and also the new generation like Technorati, Del.icio.us and... Digg.

The search tuner of Huckabuck give you the same twist as the Search Builder of MSN but with more sources it can give you more accurate results.

Good
  • The six sources of data with the equalizer can give you nice or fresher results better than any other metasearch for now
  • The control of the six sources the equalizer give us
Less Good
  • Stemming and the too much consideration of the stop words like; on, the... in the results ?
  • Many results from the same domains without duplication control
Like to see
  • Possibility to save our own equalizing preference
  • Adding new sources
Great new tool. Hope the speed will be faster and they will found fund to enhance this promising tools !!!

Google seem to go on the Affiliate Network Market. It will bring a lot of new customers who where afraid of the clicks fraud problem. Nice move and it will be easier for both publishers and merchants to see what make a good ROI between CPC (cost-per-click), CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) and CPA (cost-per-action).

The turning point of the News Business

Here two greats article on the media sector. First, from the Financial Times, the internet advertising will soon close the gap on newspapers in UK.

Second, the democratization of the News Business from Chris Peck at Commercialappeal.com
  • News will be generated by the people who are chosen, not the chosen people.
  • News will be more a conversation about making sense of the world, less of a sermon from on high.
  • News will rely on the wisdom of the many, not the insight of the few, with journalists being knowledge leaders.
  • News will be multilayered, from very personal accounts to highly evolved overviews by real pros.
  • News will be available anytime, from your phone, computer or new technologically advanced device.
  • News will be framed according to your social networks, your age and your tribe.

Censorship IS Both Way Sometimes in China

We all knew the people living in China have some trouble to see some sites outside their territory but this metropolitan site censor the news of Shangai to the outsider's user of China !!!
- Here is one of the commercial metropolitan sites of Shangai with a direct access . Look at the "Top Treads" in the right column,
- Here is the same commercial metropolitan site of Shangai with an access (proxy) via the translation tool of Google !

All the "Top Treads" column now say: Referer restriction is taking effect. Referer restriction is taking effect. Referer restriction is taking effect.........

First time I saw that !

Wow ! Microsoft release an really useful tool

The Strider URL Tracer is a new tool from the Microsoft labs who include a Typo-Patrol feature that generates and scans sites that capitalize on inadvertent URL misspellings, a process known as typo-squatting !

Why this kind of tool are not included in the OS or even better in the backbone routers ? This will close down a lot of Web's parasites !

The Chinese Internet Bubble to Blow ?

Not really sure and I doubt it will be the same as us in summer 2000 in the west, but after a few weeks navigating thoses countries, and specially China, they seem to reproduce the same bad patterns we saw between 98 and 2001 over here. Overloaded site with ads and oversaturate with flashy colors and stupids animated gif files floating around your screen with the new css layers they discover. But the market is there and you can saw more and more professional site if you use the good SE to find it.

KinderStart Files Complaint against Google

Sometimes Forbes should evaluate the quality of Associated Press article before to "publi-shit".
KinderStart, a Norwalk-based Web site devoted to information about children, says it was dropped from Google's index a year ago without warning...
- First it's not a site, it's a directory. A competitor in a way.
- Second, it's an automatic submission directory without children information from the site owner.
- A year ago ? May be you should make some little verification if that occurs after they implemented some new features in their site...
This time, KinderStart is the one making accusations of free-speech violations - in Google's case, by reducing the traffic sent to Web sites that have been wrongfully punished.

Yes that true. Kinderstart really like free-speech ! Even online casino ads and diets pills are in there since a couple of months in their comments system:

China Censorship : A Chinese View of the Situation

Sometimes it is good to see the other face perspective.

This is an article of China Tech News about all the censorship issue and globalization. The article is moderate - as usual -, but the end of this paragraph seem have not to be seen by the authorities :

America's response to technology companies operating in China is based on good intentions, but ignores the reality of a globalized world. Pressuring Yahoo to break Chinese laws is like being a conspirator to a crime. The Google logo hangs on the door of the company's Shanghai office, but the Chinese staff working inside would rather stay at the company than pound stones in a labor camp.

Google Scoreboard

Here the Scoreboard from Forbes and my appreciation too :

Google Services Scoreboard
Google Services

Forbes Scores

My Scores
1. Search:A-A
2. Contextual Ads:C+B+
3. Local/Maps/Earth:B+ A-
4. Froogle:D+D
5. Gmail:CB-
6. Base:CD
7. Search Appliances:BC-
8. Google Pack:C-C
9. Video Store:CC-
10. Blogger:C-B
11. Google Talk::B-C

1- The share of Google is probably higher than Forbes think. Also Google get more and more traffic and gain part of the pie year after years.
2- Forbes say "Google doesn't break out revenue from AdSense, but most analysts believe it is a small part of the company's business." Wrong here guys. Adsense was for the 42% of Google revenue last Q4. I didn't put a higher mark because of the splogs affecting AdSense.
3- Google have start testing ads on the maps itself and also place some sponsored links in local results in Google Local.
4- No so competitive compare to other shopping engine
5- Getting better every year. Even in french a saw more ads more ads who don't bug me.
6- The worst product/service, even before Orkut. A huge potential waste !
7- A small niche.
8- An average package but a very smart installation process.
9- A badly and very too soon launch. Hope they will be soon a huge makeover à la Gmaps
10- It's time for some enhancement here. Categories first !
11- A lot of work to do here. The Trillian addition in Google Pack is also weird !

Three new datacenters, since yesterday, are now at 25 Billions :

http://216.239.63.104/
http://66.249.93.104/ (Big Daddy)

Google Should Reach 25 Billion Indexed Documents

Some datacenters of Google display now 25,270,000,000 results. That's more than the double of the last estimate index of around 9,6 to 11,6 billion. Here the ones :

http://64.233.171.104/
http://64.233.179.104/ (Big Daddy)
http://64.233.185.104/

Here is some small comparison tests :

Results

But a bigger index didn't mean de facto a better result. I try with my name plus a term associate to me sometimes in french :
Google : Results 1 - 52 of about 407
New DCs : Results 1 - 60 of about 432

  • The new DC's give at position 3 and 4, results from Jux2 ! No so good for that query.
  • Google give me some result where I'm no longer in that page (last comment made) while the new DC's still! No so bad for that result.
  • The new DC's found 6 new results and 2 really worth it.
The best way to find it is useful for you is to test by your own.

Update : After a few test, it is better on popular/commercial terms, but with unusual query it still have a bit more of garbage.

PS: The new algo seem to favor shorter title tag !

Google Is Destined To Fail In China

A rarely signed article of China Tech News, from Perry Wu, on the Google foothole in China :

I was attending a small wedding for one of China's Internet gurus, and the CEOs from many of China's top technology companies were in attendance. They were all chums and getting along fine, even though the press portrays them as vicious competitors. Can Google sit at that table? No, it doesn't have the pedigree and it has not "eaten the bitterness" that the other domestic firms have ingested.

Google is a very open company when it comes to press releases and movements within its firm. But there are many things that can happen to a business in China that might seem fine on the mainland, but won't work in the halls of Wall Street or in the glare of Sarbanes-Oxley. Sohu.com has gotten away with the firing of top executives without notice to the press. Sina.com gets embroiled in a lawsuit that, if it were an American firm, would get it airtime on CBS's "60 Minutes" show, but in China it only gets a few quick blurbs in the Chinese press. Can Google live like this? Can it look itself in the mirror each morning and say "No Evil!" or will it instead say, "Hear no evil; See no evil"?
I'm not sure this will be the same after the olympic ! The chineses are already awake, but after the world will be !

Google China : And your Morality ?

I'm real tired to read majorities of thoses stories about evil and censorship.

  1. First, for who follow a bit the China Web tendancies since a few years, nothing have, - and will-, change at all for Google since 2002 !
  2. Second, did you think the filters have make any difference for *the chineses* who wants to have access to something ? They have absolutely no problem to reach anything. We can compare this as a beta SafeSearch Filtering !!!
  3. Third, China and Google are really so evil ? Why I see your car on the WallMart parking every week and why every big corporation comply to the chinese communist party rules ?
Hypocrisy !!!
PS: But if I read something about Google let Gmail open in China, and after give some private informations of an possible offender to the Chines governement, it will then be a different ball game !

Miserable Failure Administration Want Google Data

It's the weirdest request I ever read :
...The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches.

In court papers filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Justice Department lawyers revealed that Google has refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for the records, which include a request for 1 million random Web addresses and records of all Google searches from any one-week period.

Any idiot will never buy this reason ! It's like if DOJ ask the New York Times a year of their newspapers with all the subscribers, readers and advertisers list to find out ads about... escorts. Come on guys !

My 2006 prediction to save traditionnal media : You have to open up your archive !

Here a small part of a canadian media study I work on since a few weeks:

In the red corner : Canada.com (CanWest Global Communications Corp is one of the biggest media in Canada );

* Victoria Times Colonist
* Vancouver Province
* Vancouver Sun
* Edmonton Journal
* Calgary Herald
* Regina Leader-Post
* Saskatoon StarPhoenix
* Windsor Star
* Ottawa Citizen
* Montreal Gazette
* Dawson Creek
* Fort St. John
* Kamloops
* Kelowna
* Nanaimo
* Prince George
* Prince Rupert
* Trail
* Lethbridge
* Red Deer
* DOSE
* Vancouver Island Newspapers
* VANNET Newspapers

And the city guides :

* Victoria
* Vancouver
* Edmonton
* Calgary
* Regina
* Saskatoon
* Winnipeg
* Windsor
* Hamilton
* Toronto
* Ottawa
* Montreal
* Halifax
* Dawson Creek
* Fort St. John
* Kamloops
* Kelowna
* Nanaimo
* Prince George
* Prince Rupert
* Trail
* Lethbridge
* Red Deer

Total of indexed pages for all thoses newspapers and guides :874,000 pages in Google with the exception of Astrology who is under a different domain name.

Estimate traffic for all of the network : three million unique visitors a month.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the blue corner : LeDevoir (Small independant Quebec Newspapers with less than 30,000 daily copies)

* www.ledevoir.com

Total of all the pages indexed : 1,160,00 pages in Google for this unique newspapers

Traffic only from Google in december 2005 : 641,520 visitors

Estimate traffic for this newspapers : At least 1,25 million unique visitors a month.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion :
The tradionnal media have to open up their archives. The newspapers Ledevoir.com site have mixed articles, some are totaly free and some other are lock and give only one or two sentenses of the articles for free. But after a while, all thoses articles are crawlable by search engines thru 2002, and that's why this small media business have a unique and very performant model on the web.

Google Acquisition and Partnership

dMarc Broadcasting have been acquired by Google. After the Print Ads, Google move on the radio market with the dMarc system which is similar to the AdWord's one.
Also, Google have made a partnership with the Canada.com network to promote search and advertising.

Quaero : A lot of speculation

Quaero which means "search" in latin have a very weird first press meme. For a lot of peoples it will be the next Google killer and for other it's more an multimedia search tool with a lot of automation techniques :
The search engine utilizes techniques for recognizing, transcribing, indexing, and automatic translation of audiovisual documents ant it will operate in several languages. There is also mention of automatic recognition and indexing of images.

Hum ! I'm a bit skeptical on thoses. May be an improve Singing Fish ?

The players are Deutsche Telecom, France Telecom, Thomson and the search engine Exalead with the help of a lot of public research institutes form France and Germany.

But here it's start to be weird, it's the branding part. Quaero.com is already taken and the Quaero.org, -where the project information are Olivier-, redirect you to www.dfag-2005.com where all information is in a Flash site (Wow! Start good for a Search engine !?! If you choose the french version you will have in the bottom a link on the Quaero project in french.

It seem to be a streaming offer, not a downloading one ! Will this be the first real diversification of revenue for Google ?
